SERAPHIN SOUDBININE BRONZE SCULPTURE AT JENNMAUR GALLERY

  SERAPHIN NIKOLAEVICH SOUDBININE (RUSSIAN 1870-1944)

Seraphin Soudbinine was born in Nijni- Novgorod. He was known as a post-romantic sculptor who worked both in Russia and in France-- which became his permanent home form 1902 onwards. This same sculpture was exhibited at the Inaugural Exposition at the California Legion of Honor in 1924 (Exhibit number 181). Another example exists in the Rodin collection at Stanford University. Soudbinine was Rodin's chief stone carver for many years and is well known for his work on the original marble sculpture "Hand of God ." As Soudbinine was a favorite student and modeler for Rodin and it seems that the present bust was created at the Villa des Brilliants in Meudon, a municipality in the southwestern suburbs of Paris during the artist's lifetime and cast by Alexix Rudier, the most favored of Auguste Rodin's foundries. The sculpture is signed Soudbinine and Meudon ; Meudon being a reference by the artist to the Villa des Brillants, 19 Avenue Auguste Rodin. Rodin lived in this villa in Meudon from 1893. The villa is now a museum that contains many of Rodin's plaster models, including the full size plaster of "The Thinker".
