Arrigo Minerbi (Italian, Ferrara 1881- Padua 1960). “Mattino di Primavera” (Spring Morning) Marble sculpture signed Arrigo Minerbi, dated 1920 with a bronze title plaque - Mattino di Primavera. The title of the work Mattino di Primavera is derived from the play by Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938) of 1897 entitled “Sogno d'un Mattino di Primavera” (Dream of a Spring Morning). This play was written for and first performed by Minerbi's close friend (and often times his model), the famous Italian actress and diva Eleonora Duse (1858-1924). After her death Minerbi's marble bust of Eleonora Duse was inaugurated on February 7 1927 into the theater Manzoni Milan -- to the acclaim of the critics who greatly admired Minerbi's combination of soft and sharp modeling. (His bustof Eleonora Duse exists in several different versions. ) Minerbi's first public exhibition was at the Pesaro Gallery Milan in November 1919.“Mattino di Primavera” was first exhibited there and was also exhibuted soon after that at the Mostra d'Arte ferrarese in Ferrara April 1920. This was (quite possibly the same sculpture exhibited again). At this Ferrara Exhibition in the centre of the main room of the Bishop's Ferrara Palazzo surrounded by paintings from Italian artists Previati, Boldini and Mentassi, Minerbi writes in his book “Thoughts, Confessions and Memories that the sculpture caused uproar and was considered pornographic by the Bishop, who remarked that sculpture was no longer pure as it was nude, and a nude could not be pure! – Minerbi replied that if his sculpture did not have the voice to convince the Bishop that she was not pornographic, he then should go to the sculpture in the centre of the next room in the exhibition, where there was a marble sculpture of his mother (this sculpture was carved in 1913) and she would tell him that I (Arrigo) am not capable of creating an immoral or pornographic work. The Bishop pondered this and suggested that the nude sculpture should be exhibited in a less public place. Minerbi countered that perhaps less public would be a toilet? Eventually cooler heads prevailed and sculpture was exhibited in the Palazzo and was sold to the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma, where it was later exhibited in 1929. There are two known examples carved by Minerbi, one in 1919 (all white marble now at the Galleria d'Arte di Roma) and the present 1920, signed dated example in marble with golden striations, a rare marble much favored by Minerbi and also used for his erotic sculpture Ladra di Mele. The Nazis invaded Italy in 1940 and arrested more than 8,500 Italian Jews.(Deported to concentration camps, only a few hundred of these would survive the Holocaust.) Among the luckier ones was Minerbi -- who found refuge during the Nazi invasion at the Don Orione Catholic Institution in Rome. Minerbi was protected from the Nazis by the Don Orione Fathers. It was after the liberation that Minerbi sculpted a 35-foot bronze Madonna in gratitude on the hill of Montemario, overlooking Rome . A second Madonna was cast and shipped to the Don Orione Fathers in East Boston's Orient Heights and dedicated as "The Madonna Queen of the Universe" in 1954. Provenance ex Collection: Harrison D. Horblit.

Jan Vitezslav Dusek (Czech 1891-1966) "Hercules" Monumental bronze sculpture circa 1925 signed and with foundry marks for Franta Anyz. Dusek studied in Vienna in 1914 and in the early 1920's at the Academie de la grand Chaumiere Paris. He also studied with Emile Antoine Bourdelle in Paris before returning to Prague in 1924. Art competitions were held as part of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Medals were awarded in five categories, architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture , for works inspired by sport-related themes. Jan Vitezslav Dusek chose perhaps his most iconic work the present sculpture of  “Hercules” for consideration in this prestigious competition.  In 1936 this sculpture was exhibited at the Berlin Olympics exhibit number 864. There are 3 photos in existence of this "Hercules" sculpture during the period when it was exhibited at the 1936 Olympics and was photographed there by Dusek's lifelong friend, Czech photographer Josef Jindrich. Jan Vitezslav Dusek (Czech 1891-1966) 'Sokol Athlete" Historically important bronze sculpture.  Signed, dated 1924, and with the city of Tabor inscribed, also bearing the foundry marks for Franta Anyz. This sculpture commemorates the Sokol athletic meeting of 1924 in the city of Tabor, Dusek's home town and where he built his studio in 1922.  Sokol is the Czech word for Falcon, inspiring the present bronze --showing an athlete about to soar from the top step of a podium. Dusek, the city of Tabor's  favored sculptor, created this sculpture for the event. Sokol was founded in 1862 and played an important part in the development of Czech Nationalism by providing a forum for the spread of mass-based nationalist ideologies. The Sokol movement consciously traced its roots in physical education to the athletes and warriors of ancient Greece. In 1926 this sculpture was exhibited at the XV. Esposizione Internationale d'Arte della Città di Venezia , exhibit  number 1077.

A rare and monumental American Circa 1900 Renaissance Revival fully working illuminated copper 3 tiered indoor fountain probably by JW Fiske, of New York . The top copper bowl has 34 bronze water  jets that rise above the fountain to a height of 6 inches and in the center of the top tier there is a light that shines through the central arc of the 34 jets.
The water then descends through 40 bronze pipes that are fitted around the underside of the top tier bowl .On the central fluted column below the bowl are also 3 short bronze pipes covered in leaves that also carry water, placed between the pipes are other bronze floral devices.
The water drops 17 inches to the second tier where  another 6 lights shine through the 40 descending jets of water. On the column between the first and second tiers there are also 3  metal cherubs holding lilies and cat tails. Perched on the second tier there are 6 metal swans and around the edge, there is a frieze of applied winged  armorial devices  and lozenges. Under the second tier are 46 bronze  streams of water that pour another 17 inches into the final 3 rd tier and again 6 larger lights shine upward through the water of that tier. The base is comprised of 2 copper hemispheres. The upper hemisphere has a frieze of larger lozenges and even larger bronze winged devices on the edge, while 6 applied bronze strap work belts containing similar winged devises circumvent the hemispheres. This form is exactly repeated on the lower hemisphere Six claw feet hold the fountain at the base, their design matching the winged devices but in a claw form. The fountain has been fully restored with long lasting energy efficient light diodes (13 bright lights in all).   The color of the water streams can be changed to amber, blue amd red by placing period stained glass discs over the lights. The fountain has been completely replumbed
